How to Stay Fit While Traveling

This is pretty much the ultimate post for me. The combination of my two favorite hobbies, coming together as one, for your reading pleasure!

I know what you’re thinking – how does one person look so cool while being so awkward.

Lately, I’ve been receiving inquiries about my tips for maintaining fitness while on vacation. And with summer almost here, I decided to address them in today’s post.

My sorta serious/sorta-not first tip is to pack so much into your schedule that you don’t have time to relax. If you’re too busy being out and about then you don’t really have time to make bad choices, right? When I travel, I want to spend as much time as I can outside. Whether it’s hiking up a volcano, making my way around an amusement park, or going on a walking tour of the city I know I am getting some great exercise. If I know I’m going to be doing a fun activity, I am way less stressed about finding a time to get in a ‘proper’ workout.

My second tip is to pack snacks. Snacks are your friend! I know upfront the days of my trips I’m going to be sitting in a car or a bus for hours and I am willing to bet that any “rest stop” will most definitely involve a gas station or convenience store. Neither is known for providing the best options in produce or nutritious snacks. I typically pack a few of my favorite granola bars (hello kind bars!), nut butter, and nuts into my suitcase before I leave so I know I have things on hand. When Chris and I went to Iceland we stopped at a grocery store to get bread so we could have peanut butter sandwiches in our backpack whenever necessary. They saved me so many times when we were out on an all day trip.

Third, eat healthy when you can. Just because you’re on vacation does not give you an excuse to eat like shit at every meal. If you’re going somewhere that has a well-known dish, go for it and indulge. But, really, you don’t need to have cheeseburgers all day everyday (unless you keep visiting the a place well-known for its burgers!). I try to eat like a local when I’m traveling. In Costa Rica, I ate a ton of fruit and seafood. In Iceland, I ate a lot of lamb, seafood, stew, and fish soup. When I was in Italy, I ate gelato as often as possible because every stand advertised that they had the best gelato ever. It was science, really. When you’re traveling, if you’re like me, you know you’ll probably be eating out almost every meal … doesn’t hurt to make sure one of those meals involves vegetables.

I may have sampled them all…

My fourth tip for staying fit while on vacay is to be realistic. You’re away from home and unless you’re planning to spend a week with your toes in the sand then you probably won’t get in five solid days of sweat. (Get it ;) — because you’re probably on a beach and it’ll be hot … ba dum dum). And honestly, I don’t think you should be spending your precious travel time in a gym unless you’ve got a pretty kickass view. Really. Think about it. Who wants to visit a drab hotel gym that is the equivalent of a dungeon with big equipment that you can find at home. This is the opportunity to plan funtivities (yup, went there!). If you’re at the beach, go for a run or walk along the sand or boardwalk. If that’s not your thing, explore your water sport options – kayak, paddle board, snorkel, scuba… you get the picture. If you’re in a city, opt to walk rather than Segway or cab. If you’re going to visit the great outdoors, your options are endless depending on the area and time of year. A workout does not need to be traditional and vacation is a great time to be flexible. Seriously, anywhere you go, you have options!

In a few weeks, Chris and I will be on a cruise ship. I’ve already started thinking about what kind of activities I can do while on board besides eating and drinking. I know that I will be applying these tips as well. Vacation is not the time to stress, it’s the time to de-stress. And that’s exactly what I am planning to do.
